About this event

This program is 6 hours, held over two days to provide bicycle confidence, skills and awareness while riding. It will assist in preparing your child for on-road riding and independent travel. It is commissioned by the City of Boroondara and run by the experienced instructors from Bikes At Work.

Day 1 of the course is run in a traffic-free area and will focus on basic bike skills including preparation for riding, riding safely, safety checks, emergency stopping, using gears, scanning, signalling, riding on different surfaces, and road rules & signs.

Day 2 includes a component of instructed on-road training on low traffic quiet roads and basic bike maintenance if time permits.

Participants will need to:

 Be able to ride on two wheels independently

 Have basic bike riding skills

 Bring their bike and helmet in roadworthy condition

Who is this course aimed at and what will they learn?

This two half-day course is for young people aged 13 -16 years who have basic bike control skills. Participants will develop their bike skills and increase their confidence, road safety and traffic awareness. They will also be guided by instructors to make a trip on quiet local streets.

How will they learn?

The sessions are taught by experienced AustCycle-qualified instructors from Bikes At Work. All instructors have Working with Children Checks and First Aid qualifications. The program will be taught through instruction, demonstration, practice, games and challenges. Day 1 comprises group training for all participants. Day 2 comprises a short on-road ride on local streets with two instructors per group of 8 children.

Does my child need to attend both days?

Yes. In order to join in on the on-road ride on Day 2, your child will need to demonstrate suitable skills and behaviour on Day 1. In the unlikely event that your child is not suitable for the on-road ride, parents will be informed at the end of Day 1 that their child will not be allowed to join the on-road component of the training on Day 2. We ask that all registrants commit to attending both days of training to allow your child to experience the key objective of riding safely on quiet streets.

What should my child bring/wear?

 Their bicycle in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres

 Their helmet which meets AS/NZS 2063 standards

 Suitable clothing

 Runners or similar closed-toe footwear

 Sun/weather protection

 A bottle of water

 Snacks

 Any medication.

What is the start/finish time?

The program will take place between 1:00pm-4:00pm on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th, April. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in and prepare your bike.

Where should we come for the training?

The program will take place at Camberwell Primary School, 290 Camberwell Rd, Camberwell. You will be sent a reminder email with these details a few days before the session.

What facilities are there at the location?

Toilets, water and undercover areas will be available.

What if the weather isn’t great?

The training will be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 1 hour prior to the start time. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks. We will contact you and ask you to collect your child, if possible. Otherwise we will wait with them until 4:00pm.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket?

No, you don't need to bring your ticket on the day. We will have a list of registered participants.

Who do I contact if I have any questions?
